About Fort Hays State University

Fort Hays State University, or FHSU for short, is a public, co-educational university located in Hays, which is the county seat of Ellis County, situated in the US state of Kansas, having a population estimated at a number of more than 20 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the largest city in northwestern Kansas.

Fort Hays State was founded in 1902, being originally called Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School, which first started on the grounds of historic Fort Hays, a frontier military outpost that was closed in '89. Today, FHSU is the 4th largest of the 6 state universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents, having a total enrollment approximated at a number of more than 11 000 students, most of which are undergraduates.

The university is academically divided into 4 colleges: Business and Leadership, Arts and Sciences, Health and Life Sciences and Education and Technology, which are also divided, but into 30 departments, which offer students the chance to choose from more than 60 academic majors at the undergraduate level and 19 at the graduate level, FHSU also offering various online degrees through its ''Virtual College'', which has evolved from the Department of Continuing Education and Learning Technology in 1999.

Athletics

Fort Hays' athletic teams are known as the Tigers, who compete in various sports, for both men and women, in NCAA Division II, including in cross country, basketball, baseball, wrstling, tennis, golf and rodeo. Their mascot is the Tiger and their distinctive colors are black and gold.

Notable Alumni

Nola Ochs, world's oldest college graduate, Tim McCarty, East Central University football coach, and Pillar (band), which formed at the university in 1998, are FHSU's most notable alumni.

Traditions

Every year, Fort Hays State University holds Oktoberfest, an annual celebration very much expected by the city's residents and the university's students. The event takes place at Frontier Park in downtown Hays, on the Friday before FHSU's homecoming, and offers enthusiasts all kinds of entertainment, including polka music and various booths that serve a variety of German food and beer, a homecoming parade on Saturday morning, in which student organizations decorate floats or walk in the parade for FHSU spirit, and an exciting homecoming football game that begins Saturday afternoon.
